SUPERB FRUIT-DOVE

Wet Tropics Rainforest Life

SUPERB FRUIT-DOVE: Ptilinopus superbus 23 cm

  •  In Australia the Superb Fruit-Dove is mainly a summer visitor to the drier types of rainforests, regrowth and adjacent dense vegetation.

  • It is more common in North Queensland than farther south, where it is only a vagrant to Victoria and Tasmania.

  •  It eats a great variety of fruits, from laurels, palms, myrtles, figs and other plants.

  • Despite its colourful plumage it is usually difficult to observe.  Even birds calling loudly can remain unseen.

  • This is a small green pigeon with a bright purple crown and whitish belly. The male has orange red shoulders, a light purple throat and a large bluish black belly band.

  • It is generally seen alone or in pairs but sometimes groups gather at fruiting trees.

  • Although they spend most time in the upper foliage of the rainforest, the nest is often placed a few metres above the ground.

  • The main call is five to six clear, deep whoops

  • It is heard and observed  in fairly open acacia regrowth around Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodge
